Anthony Hurd (He/Him)
Anthony Hurd is a multidisciplinary artist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, whose work navigates identity, emotional experience, and the shared narratives that shape contemporary life. Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Hurd is a self-taught painter, illustrator, and designer whose art grew from a lifetime of creative curiosity — from making clothes and skateboarding culture to music, illustration, and ultimately fine art.
Hurd’s work is rooted in emotional landscapes: paintings that explore movement, connection, vulnerability, and transformation. His compositions often reflect a blend of bold color, expressive shape, and kinetic energy — visual elements that echo his history in skateboard and music culture as well as his long career in advertising and design. These influences converge to create work that feels both personal and universal, channeling narratives of love, loss, healing, and resilience.
For Hurd, painting is both a mirror and a bridge — a way of externalizing internal experience and inviting viewers to reflect their own emotional journeys. His recent series often emphasize themes of connection and shared humanity, exploring how relationships — romantic, familial, and community-based — shape the contours of our lives. Paintings from exhibitions such as Lovers + Fighters underscore this focus, presenting works that speak to tenderness, struggle, unity, and joy in equal measure.
Hurd has exhibited extensively across the United States and internationally, including solo and group shows at Thinkspace Projects (Los Angeles), Hashimoto Contemporary (LA), ABV Gallery (Atlanta), Spoke Art (San Francisco), and Stolen Space Gallery (London). His work has also appeared in cultural publications and books that contextualize his contribution to contemporary art movements.
Living and working from his studio and gallery space in Albuquerque, Hurd continues to paint, print, and engage in creative collaborations that expand both his practice and his connection to audiences. Through his art, he brings an open heart and a reflective perspective to painting — creating work that feels immediate, human, and deeply felt.
