Donna Barnhill (She/Her)
Born in Western New York state yet spent my childhood growing up in the dusty plains of Southeast New Mexico where I gained an early appreciation of the unique and magical beauty of the desert light. Having longed to live in northern New Mexico since I was young so that I could be surrounded and immersed in artistic creativity. Life had other plans as my career took me to various locales in Texas for the next twenty-eight years and have since returned to New Mexico full time. I was honored to be invited to be part of the inaugural Artist In Residence Pilot Program at Ghost Ranch. I work in all mediums and focus on painting both in my studio and plein air. My work focuses on landscapes, structures, and abstract forms. I particularly love to paint old traditional structures when venturing out to paint. I love the sun and the high desert and the special ambiance that only New Mexico can offer.
Artist Statement:
When I begin a painting I am hoping to capture an emotion, a feeling and the intent to freeze a moment in time. Plein air painting is more than an action and or a hobby for me. It is a meditation in nature where I become part of the landscape, part of the thread of the wind, the sun and the earth. My outdoor paintings are often an exaggerated colorful rendition of nature. I am not attempting to paint an exact replica of the landscape, but an abstract and emotive interpretation of my subject. I am self trained by immersion, time, practice and repetition. In October of 2020 I was invited to participate in the inaugural Estudio Corazon, Artist in Residence at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico as one of six invited visual artists. I am an Associate Member of Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, New Mexico Art League, Plein Air Painters of New Mexico, Rio Grande Art Association and Plein Air Artists of Colorado.
